Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, as part of being a distributed-first company.

With a sufficient timezone overlap with the team, we're able to hire eligible candidates for this role from any location in India. If this sparks your interest, apply today and chat with our friendly Recruitment team further.

The Role :

This role works across our 5 observability teams supporting our telemetry tooling and platform for Atlassian cloud services. We’re not talking about your average telemetry here—we’re collecting, moving, and ingesting petabytes of data every single day, and making it all available within seconds.

It’s a massive scale, and it’s critical to everything we do. You’ll empower hundreds of Atlassian engineering teams with world-class observability solutions, helping them ship reliable, high-quality products our customers love

As a Shield Engineer, you’ll play a key role in supporting both the platform and its customers, acting as a technical advocate and unblocker for teams using our observability tooling.

Responsibilities

What you will do :

  • Provide technical guidance to the Atlassian, ensuring user concerns are addressed, best practices are followed and enabling efficient observability at scale.

  • Be the voice of the user, advocating for their needs and helping our team prioritise improvements.

  • Unblock developers experiencing issues with the platform, troubleshooting and resolving problems efficiently.

  • Contribute fixes and improvements to platform services to address user concerns.

  • Automate internal tasks and workflows, using scripts, CLIs, or services as appropriate.

  • Maintain, write, and review documentation and runbooks for both team and customer use.

  • Collaborate with other engineers to deliver reliable, scalable observability solutions.

  • Continuously improve our ability to support Atlassian at scale

Qualifications

To set you up for impact on day one, we’re looking for:

  • 3+ years of experience in software engineering, DevOps or SRE roles, ideally working with cloud-based distributed systems.

  • Experience supporting or operating observability platforms (e.g., metrics, logging, tracing).

  • Proficiency with at least one programming language (e.g., Golang, Python, Java).

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues, including reading and understanding unfamiliar codebases.

  • Strong communication skills, with a focus on collaboration and customer empathy.

  • Experience maintaining technical documentation and runbooks.

  • Understanding of container technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines.

  • A proactive approach to identifying and addressing recurring issues, with a mindset for continuous improvement.

Nice To Have :

  • Experience with Splunk, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, or similar observability tools.

  • Familiarity with AWS, GCP or other cloud providers.

  • Knowledge of high-volume data pipelines (e.g., Kinesis, Kafka).

  • Exposure to security best practices in cloud environments.
