Jira Platform

The Jira Platform organization powers the foundational backend for the entire Jira product suite, serving billions of requests daily across a massive multi-tenant architecture. The platform is currently undergoing a multi-year architectural transformation to support unprecedented customer scale and evolving usage patterns—ensuring industry-leading performance, elasticity, and high-availability reliability at scale.

Jira Platform Extraction Team

As a Senior Engineering Manager for the Jira Platform Extraction team, you will lead the engineering teams driving our next-generation platform transformation: decomposing core monolith services into modern, resilient microservices capable of handling billions of daily requests.

Partnering closely with Principal Engineers, Product Managers, and Architects, you will steer multi-quarter architectural roadmaps, establish operational excellence, and deliver Tier-0 reliability across our global multi-tenant cloud infrastructure.

• People Leadership: Lead, coach, and grow a team of 12–18 high-performing software engineers across 2–3 pods, nurturing technical leaders and driving career development.

• Technical & Operational Excellence: Own the availability, latency, disaster recovery, and operational rigor of business-critical cloud services (targeting Tier-0 high availability and scale).

• Strategic Execution: Partner with Product, Architecture, and cross-functional leadership to define strategic technical roadmaps and translate high-level vision into clear execution milestones.

• Cross-Org Alignment: Manage complex dependencies, drive alignment across global engineering teams, and lead technical migration initiatives.

• Continuous Improvement: Cultivate a culture of quality, automated testing, continuous delivery, and responsible technical debt management.

Minimum Qualifications:

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with 4+ years of people management experience leading agile engineering teams.

• Proven track record architecting, operating, and scaling high-throughput distributed systems and cloud services (e.g., AWS, GCP).

• Strong technical depth in distributed architectures, cloud-native services, and asynchronous/event-driven systems (e.g., Postgresql, Kafka, OpenSearch/ElasticSearch, DynamoDB/relational data stores, search engines).

• Demonstrated success in hiring, developing, and retaining engineering talent, including mentoring senior/lead engineers.

• Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills across distributed, multi-region teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience leading search infrastructure (e.g., Lucene/Elasticsearch), large-scale platform migrations, or multitenant SaaS platforms.

• Hands-on familiarity with Java, Python, or Kubernetes ecosystem.

• Experience managing frontline engineering managers or tech leads.
